THE BREAST CENTER RECEIVES NATIONAL ACCREDITATION Three-year designation recognizes SIH’s commitment to breast cancer care

(CARBONDALE, IL--) The Breast Center has been granted a three-year/full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons.

The Breast Center joins a distinguished list of only 200 accredited centers in the U.S. and is the only such accredited facility in Illinois south of Springfield.

NAPBC accreditation is given only to centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. During the survey process, the center must demonstrate compliance with standards established by the NAPBC for treating women diagnosed with the full spectrum of breast disease.

Receiving care at a NAPBC accredited center ensures that a patient will have access to comprehensive care, including a full range of state-of-the-art services; a multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options; information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options; and, most importantly, quality breast care close to home.

“The NAPBC accreditation recognizes the outstanding continuum of breast care given at the Breast Center,” said Mary Rosenow, M.D., co-founder of the Breast Center. “Care that is locally managed at a comprehensive level-- from outreach education, screening, advanced technology, and treatment planning to survivorship and advocacy. We are providing Southern Illinois with the best.”

Located in the University Mall in Carbondale, The Breast Center provides comprehensive services that combine state-of-the -art diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in a supportive environment. With a team consisting of registered mammography and ultrasound technologists, radiologists, and surgeons, The Breast Center coordinates a full range of cancer care with the patient’s personal physician.

The NAPBC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to the improvement of the quality of care and monitoring of outcomes of patients with diseases of the breast. Its board membership includes professionals from 15 national organizations that reflect the full spectrum of breast care.

Fast-facts: The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimated that there would be 192,370 patients diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in the United States in 2009. In addition, hundreds of thousands of women who will deal with benign breast disease this year will require medical evaluation for treatment options.
